Tax Filing Extensions: What You Need to Know
Deadlines and Exceptions
The deadline to file your tax return online is typically April 15th. However, you may request an extension if you meet certain criteria. For example, taxpayers affected by certain disaster areas may be eligible for an extension. Additionally, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) can grant extensions in certain circumstances, such as if you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from filing on time.
Filing for an Extension
To file for an extension, you must submit a request no later than the regular due date of your return. You can do this by signing into your online HMRC account or by completing a paper form and mailing it to the HMRC.
Filing Online
Filing your tax return online is the most convenient and efficient way to file. You can use the HMRC website to file your return and pay any tax you owe. The deadline for filing online is 31st January 2024.
Paying Your Taxes
Even if you have filed for an extension, you are still responsible for paying your taxes on time. You can pay your taxes online or by mail. If you owe less than £1,000, you can spread your payments over several months.
