File for an Extension to Give Yourself More Time
Due Date Approaching
If you're a taxpayer who needs more time to complete your taxes, don't panic. You can request an extension to file your return. Follow these steps to get the additional time you need.
Request an Extension
To request an extension, you can either file Form 4868 or use the Free File Online Tool on the IRS website. E-filing is the fastest and easiest way to get an extension. If you choose to file by mail, you must do so by the regular due date of your return.
Deadline for Filing
The deadline for filing for an extension is the same as the regular due date for your return. For most taxpayers, this is April 18, 2023. However, if you live in Maine or Massachusetts, you have until April 19, 2023, to file.
Benefits of an Extension
Filing for an extension gives you more time to gather your tax documents and prepare your return. It can also help you avoid penalties for filing late. Keep in mind, however, that an extension does not extend the deadline for paying your taxes. You must still pay any taxes you owe by the regular due date.
IRS Free File Site
The IRS Free File site provides free tax preparation and e-filing services to taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $73,000 or less. To use the Free File site, you must create an account and provide some basic information. Once you have an account, you can choose from a variety of tax software programs to prepare and file your return. Filing your extension through the Free File site is the easiest and fastest way to get the additional time you need.
