Coastal Carolina's Melissa Jefferson Makes Olympic History
Former Chanticleer Blazes to Bronze Medal in 100-Meter Dash
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former Coastal Carolina track and field star Melissa Jefferson made history on Saturday afternoon by becoming the first Coastal Carolina student-athlete to win an Olympic medal.
Jefferson, who graduated from Coastal Carolina in 2023, placed third in the 100-meter dash at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
"This is a dream come true," Jefferson said. "I've worked so hard for this, and I'm so grateful that it's finally paid off."
Jefferson's bronze medal is the first Olympic medal for a Coastal Carolina student-athlete since the school joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 2003.
"Melissa is an inspiration to all of us," said Coastal Carolina track and field coach Alan Connie. "She's a hard worker and a great role model for our student-athletes."
