Quarterfinal Victory

Spain Win Close Match Against Germany in Euros

Quarterfinal Victory

Mikel Merino's goal in extra time gave Spain a dramatic 2-1 win over Germany in an enthralling quarter-final clash on Friday between the two most successful nations in European Championship history.

Spain's Victory

Spain had taken an early lead through Dani Olmo, but Germany hit back with 20 minutes remaining when Timo Werner levelled. It looked set to go to penalties before Merino, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, headed in from close range to send Spain through.

Germany's Disappointment

The result means Germany, who were hosting the tournament, will not reach the semi-finals for the second Euros in a row. It is also the first time they have been knocked out at this stage since 2008.

Controversy

The match was not without controversy as Spanish full-back Jordi Alba was accused of diving in the penalty area to win a spot-kick that Olmo converted to give Spain the lead. The referee awarded the penalty after consulting with VAR, but replays showed that Alba had made contact with the ball before going down.
