Gretchen Whitmer: Michigan's Democratic Governor
Early Life and Career
Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in East Lansing, Michigan. She graduated from Michigan State University and Wayne State University Law School. After practicing law, Whitmer entered politics as an Ingham County commissioner in 2000.
Political Career
Whitmer served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2006 to 2014, rising to the position of minority leader. In 2014, she was elected Ingham County Prosecutor and served until 2018.
Governor of Michigan
In 2018, Whitmer was elected the 49th governor of Michigan. She is the second woman to hold this position after Jennifer Granholm. As governor, Whitmer has focused on issues such as infrastructure, education, and economic development.
Other Notable Events
In 2020, Whitmer was the target of an alleged kidnapping plot. Three men were acquitted of all charges in connection with the plot.
