ADHD in Women: Misdiagnosed and Missed
Symptoms and Causes of ADHD in Women
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that typically affects attention, focus, and behavior. While ADHD is often associated with children, it can also persist into adulthood, affecting women in unique ways.
Obstacles to Diagnosis
Many women with ADHD remain undiagnosed until adulthood due to lingering stereotypes, referral bias, and internalized symptoms. Gender roles, societal expectations, and comorbidities can further complicate the diagnosis.
Symptoms in Women
In women, ADHD symptoms may present differently than in men. While difficulty concentrating and impulsivity are common, women may also experience:
- Restlessness and fidgeting
- Difficulty regulating emotions
- Disorganization and difficulty with time management
- Poor working memory
- Social anxiety
Hormonal Influences
Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle and menopause can exacerbate ADHD symptoms in women. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels can affect attention, focus, and mood.
