Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett After Just One Season
Arnett took over as head coach in December 2022 following the death of Mike Leach.
The Bulldogs went 4-6 under Arnett in 2023.
Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season at the helm of the program. The news was announced by athletic director Zac Selmon on Monday morning.
Arnett was promoted to head coach in December 2022 after spending the previous three seasons as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator. He had immediate success in his first season, leading the team to a 4-6 record. However, the Bulldogs struggled in 2023, going 4-6 and finishing tied for last in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) West.
Arnett's firing comes as a surprise to many, as he was not expected to be fired after just one season. However, the Bulldogs' disappointing record in 2023 may have led to his dismissal.
Mississippi State will now begin a search for a new head coach. Arnett is expected to be a candidate for several other head coaching openings across the country.
